I think in the song, she plays role as a prostitute who's hooked on drugs. Her hotel room is the only place where she can feel like she doesn't need anyone, but every morning she wakes up alone. As a prostitute, she believes that she doesn't need a friend or a lover, because relating to her job, it'll always just be a one-night stand.
Some traditions say that the orca whale is given marijuana as an offering. For owls, it symbolizes death but companionship. She dreams of those two animals because she probably smokes pot in order to make up for the loneliness she doesn't fix in her life.
The main thing is that she wants a friend, but she knows she can't. This is only my interpretation, though, and I sound wrong =)
