Hi! Well there is actually a logical explanation for the 'universal' sound in the charts these days.
Similar to when you listen to music from the 50's - you can tell it's from the 50's!! Same with the 60's, 70's and ESPECIALLY the 80's!!! (yeuch!)
It comes down to the current events of the time, popular subject matter and most of all, the technology being used in the recording studios. There is really only 1 type of software that all recording studios use now and that is called:
'Pro Tools'.

It makes everything and everyone sound the same, from the guitars to tambourines to drums to the voice.
In 30 years, people will be saying "jeez that song sound soooooo 2000's!".
I hardly think that Clay Aiken, or Ashlee Simpson will be remembered by then, however! :-)

because 99% of the musicians today have no talent

I think that there are many artists out there doing a song with one another, for instance a rap singer gets together with a rock singer or vice versa.

They are all on the same drug.

Probably for the same reason all people are starting to think the same. The scene of this world is changing. We've only had technology since the last century, and the effects of it are starting to become very obvious.

I think you should check into Pandora site, they play all the new music releases and you create all your own stations.
The founder, Tim P. is a great guy and values feedback personally. You don't get that anywhere else, well rarely. lol
Good luck with the head banging, try something softer and with better emotional qualities that will do what Music is supposed to do for you. You'll figure it out. Late

ok i realized this about 8 years ago and thats why no one has heard of anything i listen to.. im always like posting questions about bands and things and no one has a clue... in middle school i was totally over rap and mainstrream crap. its good your finallyy realizing that its totally commericialized. it always bothers me when im watching tv and i hear one of my favorite bands being exploited by some car commerical. (thats not the point really..) but still... you need to find new bands and a new genre.. stop listening to the radio .. its gone down hill ever since i can remember.. if im gonna listen to the radio its oldies.. because who can dis oldies.. i mean ... its classic... ok bye.

Personally, I think a lot of it has to do with the record labels. They pump money into promotion for 'Artist A', and if that artist happens to turn a decent profit, the label will look for similar artists in order to capitalize on the trend. Same reason you'll see three or four somewhat similar movies released around the same time; movie producers do the same thing.

So yeah, a lot of it does have to do with commercialism, but the blame should be on the promotion of homogeny instead of celebrating musical diversity.

You're right, music is starting to sound the same. People are getting afraid to be different.
But search around and there is still fantastic music.
