There are lots of free mp3's available for download, and they are legal, you just have to know where to look. The Freebies Blog has a free music section and all of the dowloads are legal:

I think he was sharing them, that's what got him imprisoned. If you download them for your personal use and not share them on those p2p programs like limewire you should be ok. When you download the song just take it out of your shared folder.
it is against the law. Most sites tell you that the site was set up to let people share info to one another. They also tell you that music shareing is not legal and the know it happens. The industry people will have to make an example of someonewho does illegal downloads.
