Answers: What was the reason behind Waylon writing “Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out Of Hand” ?

with getting caught with cocaine, he thought the police actually considered him an "Outlaw"

With all due deference to the Cavemen, I add the following addendum to the Caveman's good answer:

In 1978, in addition to his drug bust, Waylon became tired of the hype surrounding Nashville's co-opting the "outlaw" phenomenon. A phenomenon that he, Willie Nelson, and a handful of others started in the name of greater artistic control.

His 1978 album "I've Always Been Crazy" was his first "political" statement about these feelings, captured best in two of the albums songs: The title song, "I've Always Been Crazy," and "Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out Of Hand."
