Guitar Picks.?!

Question: I play the guitar, and am pretty good at it, but I have a problem using picks. I know the correct way to hold one but it feels really uncomfortable and it sounds too "abrupt". Anyone have any suggestions?

It can be tough switching from finger-strumming to a pick. But with practice, you'll find a 'hold' that is most comfortable for you will also produce great sound! Just play around with it awhile. Of course it won't sound any good if its uncomfortable for you! Practice! Good luck, I'm sure you still sound great either way.

you dont HAVE to use a pick. but if you go to a guitar store, they have some picks that are structured differently. choose one that works for you :)

use a thumb pick....little harder to get used to but once you do you'll never go back

may have to file it down a little because they are pretty thick

Grow your finger nails or find some thing softer....

ahh personally i find all picks uncomfortable except 1... i hate most picks because they are to big.. i like these little picks called jazz III's fairly small and comfy to use, try one, only like $1

If you're currently just using fingers, that's cool. Picks are good for really fast double picked leads. Using fingers only creates a better sound, that's a known fact.

Well u said it sounds a little abrupt, mabey it's not the way that u r holding the pick, mabey it's where ur strumming.Try strumming towards the center of ur guitar. Then if it really is just the pick then experiment holding it different way's,different things work for different people.

Don't ever use the "pointy" end...use the fatter end...

And get one kind of every kind of pick...tortoise shell, plastic, flexible, stiff, etc...and experiment between using your ring finger and/or index finger with the thumb...

I personally like the thin flexible plastic picks that can't crack or break, and I use my thumb and ring finger to hold it...

Also, experiment with how much of the pick you let extend out from your pinched fingers...I like to have as little as possible sticking out...

Trial and error...try everything until you find the most comfortable kind and the most comfortable style and fit...

you dont have to use a pick, try thumb strumming or plucking,u can also get a thumb pick
