Learning to play the piano?!

Question: I want to learn how to play an instrument. Im 23 years old and constantly go back and forth between wanting to learn either the piano or guitar. I also want to learn the cello but...

So I think Ive decided on the piano, my question is where do I start as far as purchasing one. I dont intend on buying a piano, but a keyboard. I want one reasonably priced (Under 300$) if thats practical. I also want one that can travel, The majority of the time Ill be spending learning to play will be in Iraq. Also I want one reasonably priced because, well, I dont know how to play it!

Also, it doesnt seem insanely difficult to play, at least casually. Am I mistaken in thinking its one of the less technical instruments to learn how to play? I dont mean to imply that its not difficult or wont take time and dedication to learn to play well. Just from what Ive heard (opinions) learning the piano would be much easier than learning any instrument with strings.

With regards to finding a best buy, I can't really help you. I never owned a keyboard, and have no idea where to direct you.

With regards to the degree of difficulty in learning how to play instruments, the piano has its advantages and dis-advantages.

But if you don't know how to read music, you're behind the 8-ball to begin with. There are self-teaching methods around - I guess - but you would be much better off with a "live, breathing" teacher. Seriously.

In order to read sheet music for the piano, you have to learn how to read two clefs: the treble for the right hand, and the bass, for the left.

The only instruments where ones breathing is of vital concern, are the wood-winds and the brass.

The most difficult to learn and to play of these two types of instruments are: the oboe, bassoon and French Horn.(I would stay away from any of them, at least in the beginning)

Any kind of string instrument is difficult: really difficult, unless you are born with some kind of innate talent for them.

I would suspect what will present the greatest difficulty for you just starting out, is learning how to read sheet music.

But whichever instrument you decide upon, I hope you enjoy it, and have fun,

Alberich

Congratulation on your new hobby.

pick up the guitar, that's what i play

that's great. I luv it when adults try to learn something, and not follow the motto of "oh, im too old to learn anything new" attitude.
try a clavinova, those work really well and im sure you can get one for a low price online. trust me.

The Piano Suxs dont do it. dont make that mistake play saxophone..

I'm with you...I'm 27 and learning to play was my New Year's Resolution..good luck!

i have a keybored that was 100$ at best buy.. its great it has sound effects and it teaches u from the keybored like it had songs and a lil screen that shows u wat to do... the book is easy to follow to. its fun do it

Um I'm much younger than you (11) and I must say it is not as easy as it looks. You have to practice everday 30 min and it get frustarating (very) Although you need to know the notes and all the signs and abreviations. The words that are abbriviated are in french so you need to know what they mean. There is alot more you need to know.....

actually i play the piano too, and it isn't that easy, ive been playing most of my life, and im thirteen, i have a piano and a keyboard, but i recommend you to start out with a keyboard, like you said, but when you become more experienced, you should invest in a more expensive piano, if you really like to play it, and just to let you know, it takes a lot of motivation to play the piano, and if you learn the piano, you will be able to master a lot of other instruments!! like the guitar, it might be a little easier, but ive tried playing guitar, and its pretty easy to me, after ive been playing the piano for a long time

good luck on your piano success!!

pianos have strings.

Well, I've never played any other instrument, but I have played the piano and so I can assure you that it will definitely take time and is difficult. However, once you have learned how to read music really well (which takes a lot of time and practice, by the way) you can play pretty much everything. A keyboard is ok for casual playing, but if you really want to get serious about playing the piano it will not suffice. The sound is different and often they don't have all of the keys (they stop before it gets really high and before it gets really low). Good for you, though! The piano is really fun to play and I enjoy it. :)

Congrats on choosing the piano. The best piano I've heard, seen, and touched, is the Steinway. I do not know their price range, but I think they do have some pianos under $300.

Learning the piano is much easier than any other instrument. It has a wide range of key octaves, whereas other instruments don't.

For a keyboard, I would go with Yamaha or Roland. Those are pretty good.
