Answers: I have to go with Flea...from The Chilli's...although I play a mean bass myself....lol

I think Flea is definitely one of the best bassists - hes my bass idol! Also I just have to mention Mikey Way from My Chemical Romance, he's an awesome bassist!

Flea is the best bass guitarist.

jaco pastorius would have eaten flea for breakfast

Les Claypool, or Geddy Lee.

It's a toss up between these three in my personal opinion.

Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne)
Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy. Metallica)
Victor Wooten (Bass God)

I am Leaning towards Victor but I love metal so I had to throw in the other two.

jaco pastorius, john entwistle and percy jones

Flea

les claypool for sure.

cliff burton from metalica (R.I.P)
les claypool from primus
john entwistle from the who (R.I.P)

for me, its jack bruce :)

John Entwistle of The Who. Sorry, Thunderfingers is and WILL always be the Bass Legend. Anyone who has been nicknamed three times- The Ox, Thunderfingers, Johnny Tinkletoes, is great. Even though Entwistle has been gone for almost six years this coming June 27th, at least we still have Flea, Jack Bruce, JPJ, Sting, etc. Victor Wooten is also superb.

Flea is pretty good, for an Australian, but Les Claypool from Primus is no slouch either...Jack Bruce for sheer throb .when...needed.(Jaco Pastorious for audacity...Jah Wobble for taking it where the guitar was meant to go...).

Fieldy from Korn very distinct sound...especially with their earlier stuff

Cliff Burton from Metallica - That intro on For Whom the Bells Tolls is untouchable

Victor Wooten

John Myung of Dream Theater is siiiiiccckkk.

There are many that i do not know name of that are free bass guitarists that play on other peoples albums.

Nobody's mentioned Roger Glover (ex Deep Purple) yet - got to be a contender I reckon.

Andrew McAnallen from Platform 2 rocks my socks :):):):), best bass player ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!XDXDXD

My favourite is John Norwood Fisher of Fishbone. The bass lines on the album Truth and Soul are amazing. Particularly Bonin in the boneyard and I also like John taylor's bass on the album Rio by Duran Duran though I am not a fan of them.

Matt Freeman of Rancid

I've seen him live, and he can do some nutty stuff with that bass guitar.

Mikey Way from My Chemical Romance
Paul...don't know his last name.. from Good Charlotte
Hunter Burgen from AFI
Johny Christ from Avenged Sevenfold
and the guy that plays bass in HIM.

Flea is strong, but don;t forget about Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, Louis Johnson...The funk bands have great bassists!

Jaco Pastorius any day, the Jimi Hendrix of Fender fretless.

lemmy

"best" is difficult to quantify.

For musicianship, I'd go with John Paul Jones

For presentation, I'd go with Nikki Sixx

I like all of these, because they each have their own style of playing :~

John McVie ~ {Fleetwood Mac}
Sting ~ {The Police and solo}
John Entwhistle ~ {The Who}

Edit :~

Mark A :
George Harrison was The Beatles lead guitarist. The bassist was Paul McCartney

FYI, the on-going joke in the world of musicians is that anybody who doesnt know anything about music, especially bassist, claims that Flea is the best bassist!

the BEST must be technically great, original, and influential to the world of music. Flea is great, but the best? he directly copies the style of Bootsy Collins and Larry Graham. but hes excellent at it!

many pro bassists would likely say that the best are:
Vic Wooten (jazz)
Jaco Pastorious (jazz) r.i.p.
Larry Graham (Sly & Famly Stone, Graham Central Station)
Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne)
Bootsy Collins (James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, so many more)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Geddy Lee (Rush... great vocalist, keyboardist, AND very creative bassist)

honorable bassists:
John Myung (Dream Theater)
Flea (RHCP... for stage presence)
Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy, Metallica)
Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, many more)
George Harrison (The Beatles... simple yet creative) r.i.p.
John Entwistle (The Who) r.i.p.

Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is amazing
xx

John Entwhistle The Who now dead. Jack Bruce, Cream still alive i think and me,sometimes. Play a mean bass eh looking for one. PS forgot John McVeigh Fleetwood Mac. Him and Fleetwood what a combination!

Ok, I don't think anyones mentioned Marcus Miller!

i would say Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue and Sixx:A.M.
