Some might say it's a sub genre but there is a BIG diff. between that & "Rock & Roll" or Hard rock. I say it's an actaul genre.

It's a marketing label used by record companies to sell records. I mean, in the nineties, such blatantly pop artists as Alanis Morrissette and Hootie and the Blowfish were being marketed as alternative.

Sub- genre for sure. Examples being alternative rock and alternative country.
