If you look at most truly underground artists, the answer is easy as to why the'yre underrated: They either have low/amateur quality music, or, they are "weird" and too daring for the masses.

In the case of the Alkaholiks, they were on a well known record label with a mainstream sound, and associated with some of the more well known names in the industry. But they spoke out against commercial ideals, and so their exposure became limited. And in their heyday, they didn't have access to the outlets of exposure that, say, Madlib has today. With Adult Swim, Myspace, popularity of college radio, artists don't have to get signed by a major label to gain exposure to the masses. But once they have been signed by a major label(especially without immense commercial success), it's hard to regain ground with would-be heads, or new younsters interested in alternative popular culture.

They were a tight crew in the day.
