only because they started a new revolution, with the whole Rock & Rap genre mixed into one song. it was outlandish at the time, but now its just awesome. they made history with "Walk This Way"

Just my 2 cents but they are on two different levels, they rapped about diff. things and lived their lives in two diff. times. Run dmc is the best of the old school and 2pac was the thug when BIG was around. I guess if your going for old school rap and I dont give a *** rap then I would go for 2pac just because I listened to him more. I dont hate run dmc just didnt listen to them that much :)
No 2pac is the king of rap there is no overthrowing 2pac especially Run DMC no one compares
its a matter of taste it all depends on whether u prefer hip hop in its purest form of straight rhyming and crowd rocking or if u prefer hip hps message and gangster form
