Music Rock Pop - I need your help guys and gals...?!

Question: As you may, or may not know, I am from the south (Atlanta). So, according to the stereotype I am mentally slow and have a small vocabulary. (wink) (wink)

So, could someone help explain the word "illustrious" to me? :-)

Is there a group or artist that would convey "illustrious" to me?

Thanks, so much!!!

(Oh BTW, by placing "music" "pop" and "rock" in the question subject I satisfied the censors...):-)

LOL. :)

Illustrious - notably or brilliantly outstanding because of dignity, achievements or actions.

As far as my usage of the term goes, it's meant to be self-deprecating much like the way the author of the phrase intended it to be sarcasm. I find it hilarious.

I’ll take a guess that the band U2 buys into their own hype. Bono probably wakes up, goes to his bathroom mirror and says to himself, “you illustrious devil you.”

The truth of the matter is we're all jealous of the Southerners because you have much nicer weather than we do. And yes, it's very dead today.

Eh..I meant you get the points... Report It

  • you didn't have to wink. you are pretty slow.

    Main Entry: il·lus·tri·ous
    Pronunciation: \i-?l?s-trē-?s\
    Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin illustris, probably from illustrare
    Date: 1588
1: notably or brilliantly outstanding because of dignity or achievements or actions : eminent
2archaic a: shining brightly with light b: clearly evident

Illustrious means renowned or influencial or outstanding. It is synonymous with the word "famous".

A band like The Beatles would be illustrious. They are a household name, and most people have heard of them or know their work. This makes them Illustrious.

I know and have known some very intelligent people from the South. :)

Since Sour Girl handled the definition, I thought I would add some synonyms: WK, big league*, brilliant, celeb*, celebrated, distinguished, eminent, exalted, famed, glorious, great, heavy, lofty, monster*, name*, noble, notable, noted, outstanding, page-oner, prominent, remarkable, renowned, resplendent, signal, splendid, star, sublime, superstar

Illustrious is to Professor Anger as awesome is to Fred Durst.

(Professor Anger really feels that Professor Anger doesn't go third person enough.)

    ***************
Professor Anger vey much appreciates all of the kind words about Professor Anger. Now it is time for "the Prof" to go to a big time Hollywood party whilst driving 100 miles an hour both on a cell phone and eating some In and Out burger shouting "Dude, no totally dude it's totally like duuuude"

    ***************
"the Prof" would like to thank you Steve and let you know that the feeling is mutual. Nice on Weiland by the way. He was "the only man alive who could save rock and roll."

For some reason, Queen immediately jumps to mind when I think illustrious (illustriously?). Particularly the vision of them at Wembley Stadium.

Sarcastically (or sadly), one might refer to Scott Weiland's "illustrious career" (use air quotes).

Also, the illustrious Britney Spears tested clean for drugs and alcohol. Should I be relieved or more deeply concerned now?

I could never top Sour Girl's answer cause She nailed the definition perfectly.
Just wanted to let You know, I'm a Southern Man myself...Kentucky here. Us Johnny Rebs gotta stick together...lol

We're enjoying great weather at 71 degrees down c'here in the "illustrious" South y'all! Currently rockin' in Texas and managing my "illustrious" career with all of it's "Smells and Thistles". lol
