I have played music (as a rhythm guitarist) for well over 20 years. Your question comes from such and odd place point of view that I am not sure how to answer except to say that the song could not be played without the rhythm but it can be played without the lead (in most cases). The lead guitarist in a band plays along with/ or plays the rhythm at least 80 percent of the time.

They do exactly what the name implies- create the rhythm. Mostly chord changes, while the lead will do notes.

They just play the basic chords and keep the song's main sound going.

its all in the name rhythm guitar keeps the rhythm going and you lead guitar go in for the main notes or rifs or runs what ever it happens to be......not sure about writing sorry

power chords or chords

well...i don't know anything abt writting the music notes.....
but i know that rythm guitar gives the awesome sound to the music.....u know and wen u listen to rock music, especially i feel this in McR songs,u can hear the changing of the music by rythm guitar, and wen it ends,it suddenly changes again....
but how they write the notes is some thing that i wanna know too....
Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance really changes the sound and the sense with his guitar.....
the rock songs need the rythm guitar for their Chorus....u know....
but sometimes Frank plays his guitar in the middle of the music that isn't CHORUS ....to give the different situation and feeling to the music.....u know.....
listen to the songs that i name for u,then u understand my idea:
Famous Last Words,Welcome To The black Parade,The Sharpest Lives,THis Is How I Disappear,Thank U For The Venom,or......
all of them by My Chemical Romance

they keep the rythem up throught the whole song

whats up with you and guitars
you like them a little too much
