Why would somebody buy vinyl records?!

Question: I was just on a site for "explosions in the sky" and they offer there records on cd and vinyl. Is there something in the sound that makes it appealing?

Analog versus digital is an old debate, look it up. Vinyl and metal tape recordings are analog, CD's are digital.

Analog represents a smooth change in sound, like a ramp or a hill. Digital, which is what CD media is, is the same ramp but in measured steps. So when you see a handicapped ramp in the mall, the ramp is "analog," the steps next to it are "digital."

When you record a sound digitally, some of the sounds either "drop out" or get converted to the next "step." Think of the ramp/step analogy: if a spec of dust is on one point on the ramp, it has to go to the next step down or the next step up - there is no in-between.

Many audiophiles believe you lose a lot of the subtlety in sound with digital media. Obviously the music industry thought otherwise. :-)

i have an old vinyl jukebox so thats why i buy them

Some people believe that vinyl records have a richer sound quality than digital...

Also, some people buy them because they're collectors. They want to have EVERYTHING available by their favorite artists. So they buy the CD and the vinyl LP.

They do have better sound quality than cd's do.
