For a beginning band it can be hard, most places (even small 200-people max. places) will want to hear some of your stuff before they sign you on even as an opening act for another established band but it's not impossible, I'm not trying to say that it is impossible at all actually.

I would say small venues of course would work well, places like the American Legion Association commonly hold some concerts at their halls so that's a possibility. You could also do parties but in that case you might have to switch over to being a cover band which can get kind of boring after a while too though. I would say wait until you have some good experience until you go for opening act at an established venue because making fools out of yourselves in those cases is not a good place to be in and will likely result in a breakup of the band.

get a manager first off

This is where a band manager comes in handy. Well i s'pose you could go the club way to start out. Its really quite simple. Just contact a club during the day typically in the midday hours when the head of music is in, and tell him you are a band looking for a gig. It will not be easy, as many dance clubs usually feature DJ's only, so you might want to try the bar route for a gig, which is a bit easier/ less competitive. There are many other places you can try, at least if your music is suitable for families and such, like theme parks, ball parks, public music festivals, etc. Dont be too selective starting out unless you have very many options off the back. the most important thing is to get public playing experience together, and public exposure. It could take a while, and the gigs might seem a little lame but every nursing home, nursery, and nightclub gig helps.

If you live in a subdivision or if you live near one. try to see if you can play at a block party. Then try to go to other subdivisions.

Where i live we have this place called "the pit" Where local bands/hip hop groups come to perform. They get paid, and its just a good time. try to see if there is a place like that where you live.

take a tape or cd to a club you want to play at and guarantee that there will be ___ many people there. (it depends on the venue size and how many of your friends will go. Try to strike up an agreement like,"We will play for free this time and if there are enough people to fill your club, pay us to play next time." Don't bother with the posters this soon. Every one in your band should be at a different rock venue every night outside of the club handing out a flyer for the date, place and time you will be playing. But do not hand out flyers inside of a bar unless that is where you will be playing.
