Buy Or Sell: Underground Rap fans are more narrowminded than Mainstream Rap fans!

Question: I'm buying that all day. Underground fans always talking about how they only listen to "conscious" rap like Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, and The Roots (is it just me, or are these the only examples?) because they like hip-hop with a message. I don't buy that, they just like hip-hop that's not popular. When an underground artist goes mainstream they either deny it (Talib Kweli) or accuse the man of selling out (Common). And if they like hip-hop with a message, what the hell are they listening to Jedi Mind Tricks for?

But the best explanation, buy or sell, will get best answer.

I'm gonna have to sell...the underground fans that continually list the conscious rappers and the rappers that still rap with a "message," in spite of the lackluster lyricism of the mainstream, just haven't heard enough or have only recently begun listening to the underground. While underground stans are annoying, they at least all make some what of a point - most mainstream is wack.

Then there are the mainstream dudes who are all over Wayne's nuts because he calls himself the greatest of all time. There's many more narrowminded stans that come on this site alone than there are conscious stans.

I personally try and get as much Hip-Hop as I can, regardless of the source. However, the underground fans at least will be willing to hear good lyricism, where as the mainstream stans will tell you 50 is the best of all time and will refuse to hear otherwise. So what I'm saying is, the underground guys are more willing to have somewhat of an intelligent debate once in a while, while the mainstream dudes will cover their ears and stick their tongue out when someone goes against anything they have said. Mainstream dudes just look for the hottest single.

I'm referring to stans of course.

Underground dudes need some time to develop...meaning they need to stop b*tching and just listen to more instead of complaining about the state of Hip-Hop.

That they don't like Hip-Hop that's not popular is a valid point, one that I think is correct. There's no way to refute that.

Kweli is one of my favorites, and I know he's been trying to go mainstream for years now. And Common moved up my list for breaking through the mainstream without having to switch his style up.

Edit: Eminem was the first emcee I ever got into lol. I like Wayne, I'm anticipating the Carter 3 just like anyone else...all the dudes you mentioned are mainstream, no doubt about it, especially since they're all signed to a major label.

However, I think the major point is that underground fans at least know mainstream rappers (though most don't even give the mainstream a chance), while the mainstream fans don't want to hear anything but a catchy hook. I think if one head on here would tell an underground fan to shut up and to give the mainstream a chance, they would do exactly that. If a head tells a mainstream guy the other way, the mainstream guy is gonna tell you to piss off and that you're wrong.

Edit: Yeah I feel what you're saying, but who would be more willing to cross boundaries, the mainstream guy or the underground guy? There's one specific dude on Y!A that I keep thinking about while I answer this question (who shall remain nameless) that answers every question with links to songs by KRS-One and Dead Prez, and really the only people he would listen to are the regulars on this site. I'm sure if a regular told him to stop doing that and to give the so called Hip "Pop" a try, he'll stop. Find any random mainstream guy, the next person to ask a question about the latest hot singles, politely recommend an underground dude, and they'll give you a thumbs down.

i agree..

But i listen to both
one of my favorite rappers is Mainstream(Kanye)
While on the other hand my other fav rapper(Doom) is underground..

I'm selling, if you ask me they have the upperhand because they know rappers in the underground as well as rappers in the Mainstream, thats not the case with most mainstream fans. Alot of people won't give underground rappers a chance because they feel that by being underground, they're automatically boring (its not all politics and messages). And I hardly consider Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco and The Roots underground, they're by all means mainstream. They're just not as popular as some might be.

Buy

like u said about them liking it just cuz its not popular, i think some just want to be different...and thats how they do it, they limit what they listen to while denying anything mainstream

ill buy. you cant forget that most underground fans used to listen to mainstream (or at least the heads i know). but once they get on that underground stuff, they tend to shut the radio off and say anything that actually gets on the radio is wack. i also feel you on the selling out part, i know lots of dudes that said talib sold out because he went on nick cannons show on mtv. the same people said he sold out in music too, since he had justin timberlake on a song (i actually enjoy a lot of justins work), while the album as a whole, and the particular song with justin, was pretty solid

edit:
id like to add that underground people like to compete. they try to find out about new people before others, and if someone else finds out about it, theyre considered a "hypebeast" (its used around my area, idk about anywhere else). and i like ludacris and eminem, and i was into ti a couple years ago (not his "king" bullshit), as for fabolous, i never really checked him out. but lil wayne i honestly cant stand, not for his rapping ability, id say hes above average at his best, but his voice is just too much for me.

but i know people that will get pissed at a school dance, just because they play crank that. ill be the first to admit it, its not on my ipod, but i have danced to it before. the heads would look at me like "yo son, i thought you were a hiphop head, and your dancing to this ish? your a godamn poser bro." ive butted heads with some of those guys because they talk so much sh*t to me about that, and now they call me a "hypebeast" and "poser." fu*k all that though. like i said, underground heads are too non-conformist

edit 2: i just remembered mims. honestly, when stef (was it stef?) posted a song by mims he said was good, i was skeptical. i was like, 'the this is why im hot dude?' but i checked it out regardless. the song was doctor doctor i believe, and i was quite impressed, so i got a couple of his songs. a couple days later, me and a couple friends were driving to go to a barbeque or the mall or something, and this is why im hot came on, and one of my friends was all 'man fuk this song, this dude should choke on his diamonds.' and i tried telling him that he had some quality tracks, and he said 'nah son, i dont think i can respect this dude after his singles (this is why im hot, and some other club banger, i forgot the name). i dont want to get repetetive, so just read my source...

and i feel you on the digging deeper underground. lots of times people will just listen to the 'mainstream' of underground, or i guess the really popular people, like little brother, binary star, papoose, and other big names in the underground community. thats why i kinda get mad when people say there isnt any good new music out there, because all they know is old school music and a couple underground artists that will release a new album every couple years.

Sell:

I'll give all music a fair chance. But I like underground and old school hip-hop far more. Not all rap music I listen to is conscious. But I like music that feels real. Most of that today to me is underground, but not all of it.

Who am I trying to impress, anyway? I'm the only person I know personally who likes hip-hop.

Buy!

What's worse is some of these underground rap fans don't even understand the songs.. And how about 2pac or nas.. they rap about "conscious" things and aren't underground and if you ask me nas and 2pac beats talib and lupe any day.

I Agree with you . It seems like some people with not listen to to something just for the sake that it's not underground. I'll listen to whatevers good. If it happen to be underground or on mtv all the time ill listen to it good music is good music it doesnt have to be in a specific rap category to be good

well...I'm buying, cuz I know that a lot of undergound fans are SO PROUD they listen to "concious" hip hop...to me, that's stupid, does it matter what they rap about? :( I'd probably describe myself a narrowminded, cuz um....I am..pretty simple....I'm not a big fan of mainstream rap, and probably look down on it..

Buy
If mainstream fans were able to see and hear the underground artists, they would have the best of both worlds. Where as underground fans want to just stick to underground.
If an artist wants to make money, be recognized, and get awards, he basically needs to go mainstream to get noticed.
People want to say hip hop is dead due to the lack of conscious rappers, but how can you get recognized if people don't know your music, or who the heck you are?
I have to admit, I was sleeping on Lupe Fiasco for a long time until my brother bought me the CD.
I was like damn! Where the heck has this guy been hiding? He was hiding underground.
They need to rise to the surface.

i feel blessed in the respect that because i don't listen to the radio or watch tv, theres no underground or mainstream for me. if it's dope i'll put it on, but admittedly most of the music that floods our consciousness isn't worth the time.

there is a group of fans that dig a lotta "underground" artists and the fact is that most conscious rap won't sell because it's not what the money marketers tell the music companies will sell.

so sure, a lotta fans like myself that dig "real hiphop" or conscious rappers (such as the above, although you missed KRS-One, tsk!) will find themselves digging through the underground to find that real **** because it's not often found in the "mainstream".

but i digress, 99% of the time if you wanna see the artist live you gotta buy the album, and so you should. because the show is where music is really at, whether it's arena stadium steez ala. up in smoke, or even if it's one mic and a beatbox keeping it real, live is where it's at, if you can't cut it live you're just an act. and to buy their ****, they gotta be selling it.

(naturally if you're big enough in your own right like KRS-One you can tour and drop non-stop without worrying about sales or whether the club will be packed.)

buy

I am so lost with this...I don't get it!

Anyway, at the end of the day, we listen to what we can relate to.

I appreciate all music. I literally listen to everything from MC Eiht to Gil Scott...Love Mos Def and at the same time, I like the sound of Weebie's Wipe Me Down. I'm an intelligent lady so I can decipher what's right and wrong. I let the music enlighten me to the extent of it's artistry! But, HIP HOP has been misunderstood for quite some time and not all music should be labeled as such.

And I'm gonna stop here, b/c I have no idea where I'm going...but you raised a pretty good topic!

sell--- its not a underground/mainstram rap fan thing, its a wack ni88a thing. The wack ones do exactly like you say, but there are the same amount of wack ni88as in the mainstream as in the underground, that are just as narrowminded.

I've been sayin this about the dudes who say they listen to these artists just to prove how much better than you they are because of the music they listen to. but no one's tryin to hear me, im only the realest ni33a alive.......

I guess Sell, if that means disagree.

Look, I stopped turning on the radio after the started playing Soulja boy like 40 times a day.

About Jedi Mind Tricks, I only like some of their songs but some of it is a bit silly for me.

I am sorry if the fact that I like music with a message offends you. I am not narrowminded and I like good music. Eminem is weak and has lame songs. Kweli may have gone mainstream as has almost every other artist you have listed there but I still like them.

I think mainstream fans are more narrowminded, if they were not do you think the radio would play the same 10 songs over and over and over?
