Steely Dan songs are ripe for lots of interpretations. I always read "Rikki" to be a song about a girl getting out of drug rehab, being sung by a guy in rehab with her who wanted to be her lover. He's giving her a joint (the "number") for a going-away present because she "could have a change of heart" and start smoking dope again when they get back together on the outside. She should mail it to herself when she knows her new address outside. He has told his drug-dealing friend outside about her ("I have a friend in town / He's heard your name") because he thinks she'll start smoking dope again ("You tell yourself you're not my kind / But you don't even know your mind / And you could have a change of heart"). But there are others who say that the "number" is just his phone number and he's pleading with her to keep his number for after she gets out. That's part of the fun; Steely Dan songs are so detailed and yet so ambiguous that they fit lots of interpretations. Hope you have a good one too.

its steely dan, about absolutely nothing.
I think its a phone number and the guy better keep it or he will lose out on somebody. Thats how I interpreted it but I never looked hard at the lyrics.
