Listen to the lyrics, are they about life being hard or how they're going to cry to sleep or they've been dumped? What do the members in the band look like... if they wear lots of black and have floppy hair.. and skinny jeans.. then they are emo yeah.
I would stop listening to them to prevent any furthur embarrassment, or just listen to them in private :)
It's wrist cutting music. It is "cry in my drink without country music" music. It is music that is supposed to inspire emotions in people (hint "emo") and it is nothing more than a blazing headache.

ignore labels like that. kids add them to music to make themselves feel like part of something, and the industry adds them to make music more marketable. if you like it, it's good music, if you don't, it's bad music, and those are the only labels you should worry about

Emo. The debate as old as time itself. Emo stands for "emotional", so therefore any song that has emotion in it could be called emo. But that's just crazy, would you call Beethoven's 5th Symphony emo?
People call Dashboard Confessional emo, because, well, it was. Now we think of emo as Fall Out Boy etc. but only a few years ago we thought of it as Dashboard. Dashboard was thought emo because it was emotional and the songs were often about "emo things".
Don't let what it's been labelled make you stop listening to it! Listen to music you like and you think is good, regardless of what other people think of it!
