Why does the music industry care so much about image?!

Question: I see a lot of these artists today, and i think to myself that they have no talent, the only thing they got going for them is a good look. So why are record companies and producers so focused on an artists image, why not talent? Shouldnt those "hot" people be models instead, or what? I mean, get some real talent and sell that!!!

What do you think of the music industry? Why is image the main focus, why not talent? Sure it sells, but who wants to listen to crap? I don't!

Though it's nothing new for the music biz, it's a part of what sells albums, unfortunately.

But I do think that it's more about image today more than any previous era. Esp. since the coming of MTV.

Today, you can have minimal talent vocally & ProTools & various pitch-correction programs can make an OK singer sound great. It's sad. You don;t even really need to know how to sing now. You're halfway there if you have the right look....

Image sells. The word "industry" should give you a clue; they're out to get money, not make quality stuff.

It is about the product not the artist! Beyonce is a brand name but Bob Dylan is an artist!

it's all about people's status..........and image sells.....to some people if you listen to certain artists and talk smack about how cool these people are ........ and get enough people to believe it ..... you've suddenly got a following.........and they haven't even thought about what the music personally means to them and the artists rise and fall without thought..........

Personally, I could care less what the music industry, mainstream or billboard charts think of the music I listen to and their image. In the end, I'm listening to the band cause I like the MUSIC and I feel that those bands (at least most of them) respect that. Image counts so much more in mainstream but not for the stuff I listen to.

Very true, i see what you mean. It demonstrates they made no attempt at aiming for growth, but cashing in on a popular sound. maybe, yeah, its their own popular sound, but
they're still just making that record to cash in. The state of music is in shambles. punk killed off disco in the 70's....nirvana wiped out cheesy heavy metal in the early 90's..... we need another revolution.

I hate that too. I listen to a LOT of unsigned bands. I mean I do listen to bands that did probably get famous for looks, and might not have a ton of talent, but I still like the music, not for their looks, just because I like it. But even though I will listen to some of it, it makes me sad to hear bands with incredible talent that probably never will get noticed.
