Question: It seems to be like the rule does not apply to him. I hear ppl say that rappers Ludacris and others are not considered great cause they have not been around long enough, yet B.I.G. had only two albums, and to be all the way real with you, his death made him great because he was good at creating song like "The Sky Is The Limit" and "Juicy" but off of just off raw skill and raw skill alone, I can see others touching him.

Big L is also considered a great rapper...and if im not mistaken, he did not have that many years under his belt either...Ludacris (i kno ur using him as an example) but longevity doesnt have anything to do with him, he's just not a "great rapper" in my eyes

Longevity doesnt necessarily = greatness..some ppl dont even consider that a huge factor

His death helped him sell records, which made him great

Big had that love while he was alive...I disagree about his death making him great. People were saying BIG was the King of NY, GOAT, etc. while he was alive. His death may have solidified it in some people's minds.

Yeah Nach, BIG and Pac would have fell into obscurity just like Jay, Nas, LL, The Wu, etc...Um, you shouldn't say stuff just to get a rise out of people. If you do, make sure you can back it up.

I think that people hold him as one of the greats because only a select few could match him in skill that are around now. I think that a lot of people think everyone else are commercial rappers meaning they really aren't true mc's they just talk about bling etc and you never hear them free style. No one new has come out lately that could touch him in flow etc.

If "Big" was alive he would have fallen into obsurity by now.Same with Pac.People think there great because the"star died before his time" thing is so romantic.Hell "I wanna hold your hand"-Beatles must be the greatest of all time cuase I still hear that sucker on the radio everyday.

That's a good assesment! Well its true

cosign hnic.

LL has longevity, that dont mean jack to me

I dont consider biggie to be 1 of the greatest.. he was good but definately not the best... I would take luda over biggie anyday....

Cosign HNIC

longevity is important, but there are sevral other factors that are much more important - a great album being one of them. Longevity can also hurt you though, LL being the case. He released a couple classics imo, but his last 4 albums or so were crap.

Luda is a good rapper to me...until he relasess an album that makes me say "Damn, that was fire," I won't consider him great.

Big L is right there with Biggie. 25 years from now how many albums will be released that will be better than both those guys' debuts? Not enough.

i have to cosign with hnic as well i mean biggie was raw and they may have been some people close but he solidified his spot in the time he had on this earth

I always feel that Pac and Big are touted as the greatest because they died so young.

A lot of the rappers today also claim they are the greatest.

But any real true hip hop fan with knowledge of hip hop history will often say the G.O.A.T is Rakim!

Good question.
It can go both ways. Longevity can also hurt an artist if he can't keep up with the rapid change that hip-hop goes through every year. (LL Cool J)

If a rapper can come out ORIGINAL, and do things that no one else is doing, and people love it, then he is an instant hit. (Like Biggie)
Biggie's performances were him wearing the trench coats, the mafia type attire, he had a certain type of class to his style. He was throwing money into the crowed. He was straight up original, and fun to watch. And his rap style can't be duplicated. He's original.
Now days, you see just a large group of unorganized rappers on a stage, dressed in regular every day clothes, everyone is all over the place, with their entourage standing around taking up space. I think that was the point Busta was trying to make when he was talking about some of these latest artists performances. "Put on a show"!
The only group that was able to pull that off in an organized fashion was the Wu-Tang Clan.
My point is, a lot of rappers don't "come out" with the overall package, they get better, and their shows get better the longer they're in the game and they start to learn what works.
Biggie came out like he was already the GOAT.
