Singing from your Diaphram???!

Question: how do you sing from your diaphram?

Answers: how do you sing from your diaphram?

lay face down on the ground and put your fist on your stomach. sing, trying to lift yourself off the ground with your diaphram muscle using just your fist and diaphram. it's really hard, but once you get the hang of it, singing with your diaphram will come naturally. there are probably other, less painful exercises, but this one worked for me. my voice teacher liked to laugh at me...

Start with some breathing exercises.

When you breathe in, expand your abdomen first, then your chest. My vocal teacher used the analogy of filling a bottle. The air comes in the top, but fills from the bottom.

Then, when you push the air out to sing, push from the abdominal area, rather than from the chest or throat. The air comes from deep in the lungs, and the diaphragm muscle moves upward to put pressure on it.

Try lying on your back on the floor and breathe or sing from that position. You will naturally breathe deeply and get a feel for diaphragmatic breathing.

That type of breathing will give much more support to your voice, and help give you a fuller tone. It also helps keep your pitch up, enables you to hold longer notes and phrases, and sing without straining.

Peace and Happy New Year!

.

The diaphragm is directly below your lungs, and helps you support your breathing and the notes you have to sustain for a period of time.

When you're breathing, take note of whether your stomach expands. If it is, then you're using your diaphragm. If it isn't, but your shoulders are rising, you're not getting proper support while you breathe.

Practice in front of a mirror for a while (and by placing your hands on your abdomen) and you'll realize what a difference it makes.
