Can you learn the drums without a drum kit?!

Question: i was wondering if you can learn the drums without a drumkit, just air.

Answers: i was wondering if you can learn the drums without a drumkit, just air.

Most people are probably going to scream out in protest, but I air drummed to a million songs before I got a kit and when i finally sat down in one i actually felt like i had some kind of experience. pay attention, thats very different from saying i actually LEARNED the drums. still though, it helped. excersizing those muscles (shoulder, forearm, bicep) is important and you can definitely do that by air drumming.

invest in an electric drum machine, maybe a yamaha or something, just make sure it has pedals. drum along to your favorite songs, you can DEFINITELY learn drums better that way.

if your gonna keep air drumming, by all means keep going, but make sure to remember to use your right foot for your air bass pedal.

the best way to learn is to get a real kit. go to a cheap used gear store and pick up a crappy old set and bang around on it.

no

OMG i am wondering the same thing my mom wont let me play them but i want to BADLY!!!!?

YES, BECAUSE i PLAY THE DRUMS EVEN WITH OUT THE KIT AND YOU CAN GET REAL GOOD LIKE ME! MAYBE I CAN GIVE YOU LESSONS

not really. if you want to learn, start with a practice pad, they are cheap, you can make one with some rubber and a piece of wood. then just learn all your basic rudiments and get nasty at the double stroke rolls, and youll be on your way to shreddin the kit in no time.

Most definatley.
Basically, all there is to learning how to play the drums is muscle memory. If you know how a drumset is set up, make one with pots and pans. May sound stupid but it will really help with playing more than one instrument at a time.

Some use old, hardcover books. Experiment with different sizes to achieve the desired sounds. You can buy them at yard sales for a quarter. Heck, you could even give them a read before you beat them to shreds!
:)

yeah. you can use anything that comes to hand

here's the essential kit:
drum sticks ->pencil/pens
kit->table
chimes->something that vibrates....a quality street tin.

you can keep up the essential kit guide until you get a real one

!'ave fun!

Well, you definitely can. I would reccomend getting a practice pad for sure. Put in your time early and you'll be great later!

If you end up looking for a drum set, you might want to check out http://www.drumsetresource.com/?p=29, it's a sweet guide I found the other day.

Good luck!
