I just got my electric guitar and it sounds crappy?!

first of all, Yngwie uses a hot rodded strat and vintage plexis, you aint gonna get better tone than that. 2nd, a POD is 200 bucks new, and 100 on ebay in working order. Now, make sure the guitar is in tune, keep the tone knobs on the guitar all the way up, and play with the knobs on the amp till it starts sounding the way you like.
You may need to tune the guitar. If you have an electronic tuner, then that's great. If not. Look for an mp3 of it and try yourself. If you have tuned it, maybe you need to adjust the string distances or whatever, I forget what it's called. It happens with lots of new guitars and if you want that perfect sound, it has to be taken to a specialist.
Dude, if you don't know what tone 'sounds good', I'm guessing its more the player, and not the instrument.
It also has absolutely nothing to do with the style you're looking for. All styles use the exact same settings. Ain't it crazy how they all end up sounding so different?
There are many many things. Guitarists have a tendency to study tone. It's almost completely worthless knowing many guitarists have bad tones yet are incredilbly famous (malmsteen). Now if you are in to metal the most classic thing is to turn the treble and bass all the way up and turn the middle to about half way (if your into modern metal the mid goes almost to the bottom this way you have to turn the volume up and you get a sinister tone). You probaly have a pretty bad amp knowning it has no middle control. Keep the 2 tone controls on the guitar up all the time. A Line 6 P.O.D. is a great tool to get many tones but it never does quite sound perfect (they are kind of expensive). You really need other equipment besides an amp and a guitar to get a good tone. Boss distortion and Boss overdrive pedals are horrible. Line 6 just came out with a pocket POD that's a minature version and I think it's pretty damn awesome for it's size and price.
