Even though I am an OLD PERSON, I believe it should NOT be illegal to download music.... reasons:
1. You can copy songs directly from the radio using a cassette recorder... that was NEVER illegal.
2. Most of the big companies who went to bat to MAKE these music downloads ILLEGAL actually created the recording devices we all would use TO download and record this music.... SONY makes more recording appliances then anyone out there....
3. People have been LEGALLY copying music for YEARS... be it reel to reel tapes, 8 Track RECORDERS, Cassette Records and now CD RECORDERS.... if THAT is not illegal, then WHY is downloading music from the computer????? If I want to NOT BUY a cd, all I have to do is copy it OR record it off another form of media..... people shouldn't have to PAY to record music they hear.....any more then they EVER had to pay to record it to any of the NUMBER of different ways there have been to record music FOR FREE since the early 1960's.
I think its Ok, you download the songs you like from he album/s without having to buy the cd and only like 2-3 songs out of all the tracks. If I know that I like all the songs in a cd then i go and buy it. but I mean why would you want to pay 20 bucks for 1 or 2 songs? Besides when you're buying the "CD" your telling them that they did an awsome job and when your having to download the couple of songs u did like, then your just telling them they could have done better. This is how I think that the artists should see it.
If the song is out of print, then I do not see a problem.
As for stuff that is in print, I will admit I'm torn. Of the $14-$18 you pay for an album, the artist you're supporting only gets 80c in royalties off the sale, and the rest goes to others (e.g., the record company, jobbers, record store). I'd much rather download an album then send a check to the band directly!
Still, it IS illegal. The only way I see no problem with it (and I believe this has been successfully argued in court) is if you download a copy of a song that you already own (e.g., getting a digital copy of a song you have on an old 45 or LP).
I am against it. When people put hard work into their art, whether it's music, books, or whatever...and rely on it for an income, then its like stealing. If it is someones favorite group or performer than show your loyalty by buying their products. Then there's the quality side of the issue: Downloads and mp3's DO NOT sound near as good as a compact disc. Play a downloaded tune (even if its high bits) and a C.D. copy of the same song on a good stereo system and you will notice the differences. When a song gets ripped and burned digitally and a copy is made, and then a copy is made from that copy you Loose QUALITY, which is what most of the songs on file sharing music sites (Free music) are- copys of copys. Now having said that, I have burned copys of C.D.'s from friends, of stuff I didnt have in my music collection, and it's usually by bands I never heard anything by or I justed wanted to check out if I might like them, and if I end up liking them I purchase other albums by them, or see a band live to show my appreciation for them. If all music was free then nobody would really want to put any work into putting it out, the only music acts you would hear are the ones outside the subway stations playing for your change.
the artists get millions in endorsements and receive more money to act in movies even if they cant act. The amount of money they recieve is insane and though cd sales have gone down they are still selling enough to bring in at least a million off of sells because the cds are released globally.
i just don't do it. i think it kinda rips off the bands hard work and I'm kind of weird about that. i don't do it ESPECIALLY if its my favorite artist because i dont really think its fair to them. the only time I'd make an exception to that is if its not on a CD and I've checked the legal sites. then i consider it. i also hate to do it because I'm a bit of a pansy and I'm always afraid that i might get in some kind of trouble for it. you know, i keep picturing cops at my door telling me that i have to pay some freak fine for the 2 illegally downloaded songs i have. LOLZ.
