Guitar strings breaking while tuning?!

Question: Last year I bought 2 new guitars, a steel stringed acoustic and an electric from the same site, they shipped them to me, with the strings loose (I imagine so they didn't break during transport). When I started to tune them (using a tuner) they almost ALL broke without fail, on both guitars, while not even close to the correct pitch.

Since this time I haven't picked them up, partially due to frustration and partially due to a phobia about them having been whipped across the hand with about 6 strings (3 from each) in one day.

I've been thinking it may just be the strings they shipped the guitar with weren't very good quality? To keep costs down maybe? They were cheap guitars.

The bridge etc don't seem particuarily sharp, neither are the frets (not that I had a chance to actually play before they broke).

Do you think its just the strings?

I'm going to look into buying new strings soon, any suggestions or tips on buying them will be very gratefully received.

Thanks! Sorry its so long

Since you're going to be replacing the strings, check the saddles on the bridge; tuners; and the nut for burrs. You may have to do this with magnification to be sure, but you make it sound like the guitars weren't too well manufactured. Were they breaking at the bridge or elsewhere? Check the area in which the breaks were located. If everything looks smooth, by all means, put on some D'Addario strings and be careful.

The strings are being tuned too high or tight. You can come on the same note in a higher octave which would cause you to break your strings. Try to "detune" to keep in the same range (octave) but correct pitch. Try D'Addario strings, we use them here for guitar and bass.

yeah it's probably the stings, since sometimes people don't provide the guitar with good guitar strings. Just buy new strings and dispatch the old ones. Be careful

its two things really.

Was the room you were tuning the guitars too vey quiet? if not then your sending mix signals to it and not sending you the proper pitch for your guitar.

Other one is the quality of the strings SUCK.

i had the same problem with my gutair buting a new set of strings should fix the prob cuz the strings that companys ship on gutrair r very cheap and also make sure ur not twisting the knob so far that the strings r snapping use a tuner and gentaly turn each nob and figure out witch way to turn th slowly tune :D good luck

to tight have them loose and slowly tighten gently
