Question: I've heard several people use the term, but have no idea what it is!

Think in terms of the different strengths and weaknesses each voice has. Like the difference between coloratura and lyric sopranos. there are songs and operatic roles that require similar rangens, but different abilities within the range. Like an ability to move quickly over melismatic passages, and an ability to sing high notes quitely, vs the ability to power through wagnerian endings. Each differnt style require a specific vocal fach.

It's a term used to differentiate singers by the quality, texture, weight and overall colour of their voices. It was traditionally used for opera singers.
