I have recently discovered that there were many artist who have recorded Long Black Veil...I'm not sure who recorded it first though. They are all great versions but my favorite version will always be Johnny Cash's.
I'm pretty sure it was a traditional song & whoever got claim for writing it, just put it on paper & were arrangers of the modern version.
My great-grandmother sang it & had known of it in her youth, maybe the 1890s? This would've been in Arkansas at the time.

I have heard a version of it by its writer Marijohn Wilkin. dont know when she sang it though, but since she wrote it i'm guessing she may have had it out first.
