It counts who u are Djing for...Location is key when Djing...U cant play certain music in some areas because its just not what they listen too...Like playing a lot of snap in NYC...Or playing KRS one in Atlanta...lol just doesnt work...U have to research what ur area likes to listen to...Plus most clubs play music thats popular on the radio. U just need a diverse catalog of hip hop.
NsAyN3 is right about that....you also gotta include your own favor of music..your own type of Hip Hop music...so you can stand out from other DJs...just like rappers stand out from others.
points well made, location/crowd is key...often, you'll have to feel them out...some tracks will work on some and won't on others...
and don't forget to bring your own flavor into the mix...if theres a track you like, that makes you move, chances are it will make others move too, you just have to introduce it the right way...work em up with some popular, known pieces and mix some untested stuff in and watch the reactions...
if you're mostly doing hip-hop, you might look into some breaks, funk, or even trip-hop to bring in diversity...those styles tend to have similiar beats and mix well into hip hop (usually)
and don't forget to shop for artists outside the states...lots of other countries (especially the UK) have really great hip-hop and breaks that are dance friendly and more often than not, records that are a few years old from other parts of the world will be seen as fresh here, because of general lack of exposure...
