*Sigh*...Once again, it seems someone is judging an entire genre of music just from what they see on TV and hear on mainstream radio. That's like saying "All rock is about is biting the heads off small animals and destroying your instruments on stage," or "All jazz is about is guys with bad hair and a baritone sax making corny elevator music." As fans of either of these genres will tell you, that is certainly not the case. It's nothing more than a wide-sweeping generalization.

Even though you might not know it, your opinion is based on only one dimension of the genre (the mostly negative and stereotypical mainstream rap that's force fed to us on a daily basis) instead of the genre as a whole. Not all rap/hip hop is like what you see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If you were willing to dig a little deeper into the genre, you'd discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny, violence, sex or is filled with profanity (i.e. - conscious rap, Christian rap, etc.). As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than money, sex, drugs and murder. For example:

- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- Pharoahe Monch
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Jean Grae
- Lupe Fiasco
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)

Unfortunately, you'll rarely (if ever) find any of them in the mainstream media because for the most part, good ol' Corporate America has flooded the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance. That's what the real problem is.

No problem - glad I could help. Thanks for the 10 pts.! :) Report It

  • I know, I know.

Oddly enough, I have never met a girl that doesn't like rap... though...

...but yeah... It's scary to me how much hard-earned cash people spend on rap albums. That's a huge waste of money if you ask me. It's like buying cardboard.

cuz the beats be bangin'! LOL and anyway the next time you hear rap music, turn the radio/t.v....no one forces you to listen to it...furthermore not all rap songs speak about clubs, liquor, sex & spinners...try listening to "runaway love *by ludacris* or Motivation *by T.I.*" that has nothing to do with the sterotypes you just listed...many of them don't so also try researching some of the lyrics since it appears that you think all rap songs fall under the sterotypes you just posted....if you don't wanna do that, then my advice to you is to change the friggin' station!

    Honestly Your think of.

Pop Rap thats what I call it.

    Thats the new kinda stuff.

If you listen to classic Rap.

    It's more about Life,The Streets,And Corruption.

first of all nobody told you to listen to it.. second not all rap talks about what they have but if that is all they know then that is what they are goin to talk about...and nobody wants to listen to my dog died, i'm sick of this town, goin to rehab, my girl left, all the time either thank you. at least rap doesn't make you depressed.

i dont listen to rap that much ... but i like country music and everyone says that all counrty songs are about the same thing., I dont think they are!!! so to you they might all be the same but there really not!

they get mega bucks for talking about it though. Sounds like a hater 2 me. R u one of those aspiring rappers who can't strike a deal?

wtf u listen to u just listen to the wrong rappers

damn thats like the 5th question about people hatin

man u guys r giving me a headache u dont like it get the hell out of our section before i start bashin on ur hippie musik

Your asking why do people listen to it...why are you listening to it if you hate it so much? And why are you in the hip hop section? And if you listened to real hip hop music maybe you would realize that you might just like it. =0)

Let me tell you something....ALL rap music is not like what you just said....You better take a good listen to some underground rap before you EVER speak on Rap music again.....

Don't judge something based on a few things here & there.

Do some research & then come back and tell us what you think.....

not all rap music is like that. if you don't like it stop talking about it, thinking about it, looking at it, smelling it...

I said it before, I'll say it again, your opinion is insignifcant, most likely you are insignificant, so there is no point of debating it with someone destined for a mediocre life that will not affect the world whatsoever.
