What was underground hip hop like before the internet?!

Question: It was alot more gutter than it is now, and these underground cats now are hungry, but back then they were starvin'.

I found out about underground MC's from these people:
Tony Touch
Lazy K
Incognito
DJ Clue
S&S
Hot 97

Mixtapes galore, which is why I rarely heard west coast music as a teen. It was hot though. I've heard alot of underground artists that failed to blow......they were hot back then.

More underground.

a whole lot better than it is now.

DUNO

Not completely but a good majority of it was, man I miss those days.

Hip hop the music? Or Hip hop the culture? You can trace hip hop back to the late 70s early 80s and street dancing... Please clarify your question and I think you'll get a better response. Also, check out wikipedia.

Amen to capitalx! Better than it is now.

it was all about the beat and fast talking not really alot of what it is today

Just as annoying & crappy, except it wasn't foisted upon innocent folks who don't wanna hear it!
That is unless some inconsiderate fool parks next to you or drives by your house 50x's a day & night with it blaring out of their rolling boom box!

It was like the equivalent of cavemen discovering fire

Usually i just heard of underground rappers from mixtapez before da net

I personally wouldn't know, but according to a friend's older brother, the only way you could learn about underground artists would be to attend local performances and cop a cd there. So basically, unless you travelled the country, the only underground you would know would be that in your hometown.

Obviously it's better now.

WELL I BELIEVE THE ARTIST WOULD B DA ONE TO SPREAD DER MUSIC TRU THE STREETS & BATTLE @ LOCAL PLACES DEN ONCE DEY WER HEARD,REST IS HISTORY....(DATZ HOW I HEARD UNDERGROUND ARTIST'S)PLUS DEY HAD 2 SELL CD'S & SPREAD WORD OUT, THEY PRETTY MUCH LET MUSIC DO ALL THE TALKING & NEGOTIATIONS W/ RECORD LABELS

*I TINK IF WE STILL DID IT THAT WAY INSTEAD TRU INTERNET, WE PROBALLY WOULD HAVE "REALER RAPahS & mUziCk"

GOOD QUESTION.
JUST LIKE CRYPT SAID THE SHOWS.
THE SHOWS WERE ONE OF THE ONLY WAYS TO HEAR UNDERGROUND HIP HOP MUSIC.NOW YOU COULD SEE SOME OF THE SHOWS IN YOUTUBE JUST INCASE YOU COULDNT MAKE IT TO THE SHOW.
