No offense to "Nine Inch Nails" but when it comes to songs evoking life's struggles, emotion, heart and soul you can't match "the man in Black".
God rest his soul.
God rest June's soul.

i've never heard Johnny Cash's version, so NIN's.

edit:
i listened to Johnny Cash's version.. i still like Nine Inch Nails' more though. probably because i heard it first.

The "Kermit the Frog" version of "Hurt" on Youtube is better than Cash or NIN....and I'm not even joking....its by far the most tolerable.

Johnny Cash's BY FARRRRRRRRRRRRRR, and i cannot believe that dork said he had never heard it

Johnny Cash!
My answer is very biased though, it wouldn't even matter if NIN's version was better, even though it's not. I just have a real thing for the originals.

NINE INCH NAILS ... Trent will always be BADASS

It depends on the style you like. I feel that NIN is better. That is also the first version I ever heard. I do have JC's version. I just prefer Trent's.

Deaths by Carrots, NIN's version WAS the original. I prefer Cash's cover though

The original is ALWAYS better, even if it's not. Therefore, Nine Inch Nails.

Nine Inch Nails version is my favorite

The version by J.C.
I agree with what NIN (Trent Reznor) said about it themselves. They wrote it for Johny even though they did not know it at the time.

I will say that one of the nicest tribute songs to Johny Cash I ever heard is Nick Cave's "Let The Bells Ring"

wow def the johnny cash version the NIN version blows

its a great song..both versions i mean...but i'd go with johnny cash's if i had to choose

Johnny Cash's is much better. It makes grown men cry.

Trent Reznor still occasionally refers to "Hurt" as "a song that isn't mine anymore".

Much in the same way that Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" was done by Jimi Hendrix - so well that Dylan credits Hendrix as the one who really "owns" the song.

Umm... I would choose Nine Inch Nails. Johnny Cash is also good but for me, just for me, I like Nine Inch Nails' version of Hurt.

NIN. I find Trent's voice easier to listen too.

Johnny Cash. He's a classic
