What is the meaning of the Song, "Losing My Religion" by the Band REM?!

Question: I happen to love this song, but I just don't know what it is about.

Despite the title, the song has almost nothing to do with religion!

I looked it up and I got mixed versions of the meaning of the song.

Here are all the things I got when I looked up the meaning:

-coming to terms with being homosexual
-being in love and knowing you can't be with the person
-being considered an outcast
-getting drunk

some even say that there is no meaning to the song.....

does anyone know what the song REALLY is about?

Mr.Stipe spent his formative years in and around Athens, GA, where "losing one's religion" means, more or less, losing one's temper...

Don't think TOO hard, you'll hurt yourself. Lyrics are often just words that "sound good" and are not intended to have specific meanings, especially with a band like REM, with whom Mr.Stipe initially just made noises that sounded like lyrics and weren't actually words.

Stipe himself said it's about a crush that falls apart. The rest kind of explains itself.
