I love him, and he is in my top 10 mc's of all time (which are in no particular order), although i was born pre 1985, i think you should take it easy on the youngins cause it is possible to have him as their greatest, age doesn't always play a factor.
Heck there are people older than me who think lil wayne is the greatest mc, so it has nothing to do with age, its just opinion.....

I think rakim and big daddy kane took emcee-ing to a whole other level, lyrically things were a lot simple before them. Taking complex syllables and putting it in a rhyme format that was smooth but incredibly intelligent. He "changed the times with the rymes that he thought of"-Ra himself. They really made every other mc out there step there're game up because if they didn't they'd be left in the dust, like kane said "ain't no half steppin" he made it known. You can't come with "I met this little girly, her hair was kinda curly" and be the top mc's anymore it was a thing of the past even though that was just a year earlier. Rakim was really ahead of his time most of these rappers don’t even spit close to what he did in 87-90 in 2007. You can't name any other mc in the top 10 of all time whose main influence wasn't Rakim or Kane in 87-90.

Scott Joplin was way before his time but he still knows his history of how jazz came to be.

I'm born in 88 & he's the greatest of all time....u do have a point because if sum1 thinks Rakim is tha best ever, he should probably be able 2 name a million songs but I honestly can't....the fact that I was born later is a big reason why but ANYWAY......he's tha best simply because he created every other style of rapping besides rhyming "cat" with "hat" and the simple stuff.....he derived EVERY SINGLE METHOD besides that so he's tha greatest by default....he didn't invent rap but then again he pretty much did, u know? as 4 tha songs I do know, it's just plain fire....no flaws at all....no fake stuff no frontin' just cold hard lyricism........he also inspired every1 else after him so he's my inspiration AND my other inpiration's inspiration.........that's why Rakim > the rest
born in 90. I dont believe in the whole "greatest mc" thing but why he's dope.... Paid in Full and Follow the Leader. Also, he basically invented rhymin more than just the last syllable. No one was doing that before him except for maybe kool moe dee, but Rakim did it for an entire album, so thats why.

well he aint number 1 on my list, but i think alot of ppl will just pin his lyrical ability against rappers of this time...theres just no comparison..personally, i think if u werent there to witness that MC's impact, you cant call him the Greatest of All Time...
