I don't know what you like, but if i were to recommend a band to someone who wanted to hear good music, I'd first off suggest the Beatles, just cos they were the best band ever.
However, I have my own taste, which goes towards the rockish and noisy and alternative and dissonant end of things, and so I would also recommend King Crimson (esp. 1973-1974 era), Talking Heads, Television, Art Bears, and if you really have to have a band that is currently at work (although King Crimson is still going and kicking ***), may I suggest Amplifier?

I would recomend My chemical Romance. They have some very emotional songs. yet they just freakin rock on. One of the best songs would "Teenagers" it is about a boy that just came out of boot camp and people are trying to get him on the right road
