You don't have to play an obscure instrument to get scholarships---secondly, playing an obscure instrument makes it difficult to get in ensembles because they aren't always called for in orchestral, band, or even choir settings.

If you're talking about college scholarships, they don't give out money based on your instrument--they give money based on your skill level, if you're in an ensemble (they call it a "service award), and if you're in any other service ensembles (marching band, quartets, etc).
You could probably get some unique gigs because unusual instruments are quite novelty in the states, but not often.

Piccolo is a smaller flute.

There are flutes played in other keys that if learned, help gain a lot of respect because it shows your abiltly to transcribe music sometimes, this website gives a list, there's alto, bass and soprano flues just like any other instruments, and actually oboes and saxophones have been known to be related in many ways to a flute, which is why jazz ensambles often encourage flute players to learn the alto sax.
