Johnny Marr for his sheer audacity for what he gets away with...an innovator and explorer of sounds that Jeff Beck embraced...the rest are stuck in the past of their own making...not that there's anything wrong with that....

I beg to differ. Depending on your musical knowledge (OR LACK OF) I can see why you might say that there are "no great guitarists from Scotland, Wales or Ireland". I can think of several very notable rock guitarists from those countries. Report It

And you posted this in "Rock and Pop". Nowhere does it say "UK & Ireland". Report It

  • David Gilmour from Pink Floyd.
    so melodical.
Some of his solos are fantastic.

Mark knopfler style all of his own

I would say Clapton, the legend

Pete Doherty. If only people knew him his amazing talent and not cos they've read about him in the Sun! Libertines best live band .

    (no order)
    Steve Clark
    Vivian Campbell
Phil Collen (Def Leppard not the singer/drummer)
    Rick Savage
    Jimmy Page

I think people are getting Phil Collen and Phil Collins confused...

    Jimmy Page, hands down.

I am a huge fan of Keith Richards but have always thought Brian May is a hot guitarist..mmm David Gilmour, Hendrix, there's more than one methinks...

    Eric Clapton and Gary Moore....
    Jeff Beck is fantastic too.

Hendrix is the greatest but he isn't British.....

Brian May from Queen - he was the best ever in my eyes - impressive but not going on too long on solo - that gets boring!

    Jamie Cook
    Arctic monkeys

    He's Awesome x

    Gary Moore
    Brian May
    Francis Dunnery
    Dave Gilmour
    Andy Summers
    Mark Knopfler
    Johhny Marr

I like them for their individual styles an sounds, each in an equal amount depending on my mood at the time

Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple. Or Martin Barre, Jethro Tull.
And if you're including acoustic guitars, Gordon Giltrap.

    Jimmy Page

    i dont know why
just the way he plays the guitar is so awesome

Paul Kossoff of FREE was one of the most soulful ever. Also manzanera, iommi, page and gilmour, they all got that soul bro.

tonni iomi glen tipton and kk downing just to name a few

Brian May, Adrian Smith(Maiden) and Glenn Tipton(Judas Priest)

People! Hendrix is not British(he's scottish)haha

    Hendrix, Page, & Clapton.

Joe Brown.A sixties guy who also plays a wicked mandolin and ukulele.Very under-rated as he also played as a backing musician for a lot of people.Anyone who has seen him live can testify to that.Have a listen to The Sound Of Fury album by Billy Fury to hear a great rock`n`roll guitarist.

Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols. He just Knows....

    David Gilmour
    Jimi Hendrix
    Phil Collins
    Brian May
    Roger Waters
    Jimmy Page

    Jimmy Page.
If you need a reason, I could cite a bunch of Led Zeppelin songs (specifically Bron-Y-Aur Stomp). Check out some concert footage of him playing... What he does with a violin bow is beyond words.

Robert Fripp. Reason: Listen to pretty much anything by King Crimson...and that's why.

    Also, David Gilmour.

I am going to have to go with David Gilmour.

keith richards i think was the most well-rounded guitarist, jimmy page is a really close second though...jimi hendrix, brian may, phil collins, eric clapton all excellent as well

    jimmy page-led zepplian
    steve clark-def leppard

I have several favourite guitarists, because they each have their own style. In no particular order :~

    Mark Knopfler
    Jimmy Page
    Peter Green
    Eric Clapton
    Ritchie Blackmore
    David Gilmour
    Slash {yes, he is British}

Yes, Yes, Yes! Every decent British guitarist has been covered. The usual suspects, Clapton, Page, Beck, Green, Moore, Iommi, Blackmore etc, and it's nice to see Kossoff, Barre and Fripp get mentions as they are often missed out in this kind of thing. However, one superb guitarist has been missed and that is Richard Thompson, what a technique.

By the way, Sabe99 seems to have got his/her guitarists mixed up with his/her drummers. Phil Collins indeed.

Gary Moore.Check out the guitar solo on "Parasine walkways".

    Mark Knopfler by far.

    Jimi Hendrix :)
    he started there
