Is this comment an insult or not?!
Question: Last night on "Clash of the Choirs" Ms Patty LaBelle told the lead singer in Blake Shelton's band that he sounded black and that the should keep singing. (the man was white)
I was like "what the heck" what was that suppose to mean? This isn't a racist question just want you thoughts on her comment.

I think that she probably meant he had a particularly soulful voice i.e. sound that is associated with that kind of race. Lol dont think she was being insulting

No I don't believe it is racist. You know when you hear a new piece of music for the first time, you can usually tell what colour the singer is by the tone and feel of his voice. For example, you'd instantly visualise Oasis' vocalist with a white guy, and listening to James Brown you'd just know he was black.
The guy from the band must have a different kind of voice from the stereotypical white voice. I guess, you'd expect a white man's voice to be quite raspy, whereas a black man's voice is usually more soulful and melodic.

If Patty La Belle tells you to keep singing, how could that be an insult? (black people have wonderful singing voices!)
If a white woman made that comment, she'd be strung up.
Bottom line is, it was an inappropriate comment, but not the end of the world. To me the bigger offense is having to look at Michael Bolton half naked. Hoooo! someone needs to tell that man to button up that shirt! Cause man I don't want to be lookin at no dried out chest hair on some 60 year old has been.
usually a 'black' voice is refferring to a husky, or deep, or soulful-type voice. or, it can be associated with a particular accent. like the difference between britney spears and beyonce, j-kwon and eminem. also 'black' singers can be quite trilly, and a bit less operatic. a 'black' choir can have a much tinnier sound than a 'white' choir.
I think that as said here before, "Black" is usually associated with you know that style of Luther or Whitney. It's that deep, deep...souful slighty sexy (might I add) voice.
I think that it's an indirect compliment to say good sound voice. You know how those Black men who are bases sound. Tongans (or Polynesians, whatever) they have that same thing...They can sing so good! No offense to White people or anything...
My honest view is that Whites are associated with okay singing, okay ranges, falsettos...other races have the soul, though. That's for sure!
