i don't think it is music. not real music at least. is their instruments? no. is their singing? no. there is a beat but i mean seriously, its not even good. motown is good. i love motown. new rap crap is talking about things that i don't want to hear and idolizing things that are bad, which is stupid. music should make me feel good and wanna dance. not try to make me think that women are only used for one thing and then thrown away, cause that is what rap makes women sound like.
i don't think it's music at all. i hate it. it's just ppl talking and rhyming. if that wanna do that they should become a freakin poet. they have absolutely no talent in my opinion.

Rap and Hip Hop is very much music, it's just an extention and an evolving form of funk music of the 70's and soul music from before that, and rock and roll music from before elvis presley's era, all of which were generated in the african american community. Yes, R&B and Rap tend to be seen as having all their music focus on sexual activity but that is the reality seen in almost all music today, it's possible hip hop has capitalized on it the most, but if Heavy Metal Rock music was still topping charts instead of Rap, then they'd be under the same accusation. I honestly don't listen to rap too often, but I plan a career in music and have much respect for it. It's easy to... haha you asked for no speeches. Okay then simply yes I believe it is definately a profound and beautiful form of music.

I guess is actually isn't music, but then that makes Tom T. Hall and Roger Miller (old country artists) not having made "music" either. They also more or less just spoke a story.

People that think that rap and hip hop are not music don't know any of the good ones and judge solely based on what they hear on occasional radio stations or blasting out of car stereos.
Music is defined as "the art or science of combining vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion".
Music is objective. What some find as beautiful and expressive, others find is vulgar and shallow. Any art can be debated in this way.
It is pointless to say that something isn't art or isn't music. By definition, it is. You just might like it or dislike it, and that is the only thing to be argued.

Everything is music. From a classical concerto to the sound of tractor trailers down shifting to the sound of a woman crying to techno to, yes, rap. You don't have to like it, but that doesn't revoke the label of "music". Some rap (old and new) is very thoughtful, meaningful, and the artists have incredible talent and potential. And then, some of it is pure $h!^. But the same can be said for all traditional types of music, and it's all about the interpretation of the individual.
I agree with "Cinnamon." Rap/Hip Hop is music just like rock, jazz, country or any other genre. Remember, not too long ago a lot of people didn't consider rock & roll to be music either. Regardless of whether or not you like it or even understand it, it's music to somebody.
p.s. - And in case you've forgotten, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, MC Hammer, Tone Loc and Digital Underground are Rap/Hip Hop artists.
p.p.s. - And to those who think all Rap/Hip Hop is the same, I assure you, it's not. That crap you hear on the radio is not real Hip Hop.
Hard to define but one thing is for sure. It is an outlet for talentless, lazy, wanna be "musicians". They use sampling to create a rhythm or melody for their so called music. It is full of plagiarism and no originality at all.
