How Do You Feel About Artists Sampling Others' Music?!

Question: I think it's tacky. Songs should be original if they're not a remix of another song.

Ex: Finger Eleven's "Paralyzed" intro sounds awfully similar to Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" chorus.

Joe Elliott of my favoriteband Def Leppard once said "Music is "borrowing" other artists song. Not to take the music, but to take something you like and make it sound your own. Not note for note, but make the sound yours."

But as far as sampleing..I hate it. If you cant make your own music, then just go home.

Yes.

I feel indifferent.

I dont mind if one band attempts anothers song, like when Red Hot Chili Peppers did Jimi Hendrix Experience's 'Fire'. That is o.k because it was done well and is still very like Hendrix's version, but I hate it when rockmusic is taken and made into dance music or hip hop.
I also hate Indie rock. I used to like it but that was before every second band under the sun started playing it. Now it all sounds the same to me because I've heard what seems like the same song a thousand times over.

I'm all for it, if they do it the right way.
There's nothing wrong with borrowing parts of a song LEGALLY.
*coughvanillaicecough*

Mostly I do not like it.
It is unoriginal and lame.

There are instances where it is very well done and actually adds something.
But in general I think it is whack.

Sampling is mostly a hip hop thing. I don't mind cover tunes, but sampling ,to me, shows a lack of creativity and ability to come up with original ideas.

Lame. Very lame. Did Hendrix or the Beatles do that? If you want your music to last, do your own work.

Don't mind it as long as the song isn't all samples

I've always felt that it was unethical and lazy.

Sometimes it's just a coincidence. For example, I doubt that Bruce Springsteen was sampling Tommy Tutone's "867-5309" when he wrote the intro to "Radio Nowhere", but they sound very similar.

I like my favourites from the R&R era to be left well and truly alone. If some of todays musicians can't make their own stuff, then pack the game in

I personally think you should come up with your own music. This is relatively new. Come up with your own style, I do not think its 'flattery' I think its being unable to come up with anything unique so you take what someone else came up with.

Yeah I think it's tacky too. Nooo wayy, Finger Eleven is AWESOME, they wouldn't copy anyone else's music, they're too good to do that...franz is pretty awesome too. sorry i don't mean to come off as an annoying obsessed fan. because I'm not.
