Why isn't it illegal to buy used CDs?!

Question: We all know it's illegal to download music without paying for it (I would think we all know that, anyway.) Why isn't it illegal to buy used CDs from half.com or Amazon? The artist/musician isn't making any money from it. Just wondering...

Good question!

When you buy a CD, along with physical disk and package, you are also buying a license to play the music for your personal use. You do not have permission to make copies. It is the same concept that applies to a software purchase.

Therefore, when you transfer the physical disk, you are also transferring your license to listen to the music on it. That license has already been paid for and is simply changing hands.

Seriously, that's one of the best questions I've heard!

peace

.

Because the CD's have been payed for once.

because the artist made his/her money from the original sale. Thats all they wanted. Oh, and its only illegal if you get caught. LOL,

well u actually atleast pay for cd's

The artist made money from the original sale. As long as they got that money, they don't really care. Come on, they multi-millionaires. Used CDs are the least of their worries.

I don't know....but that is a very good question. Maybe because even though the artist isn't making anything, the CD was still paid for originally, so it doesn't matter if it's sold again. ....just a theory....

some people take them to sam goody's or other

because its already baught

The artist made money off of the origional transaction, while on the internet they make no money. I get tons of free music from the library though. I love that place!

They got paid when the CD was first bought. I never heard it was a problem I'm an artist and I get all weird about downloading and stuff. I have heard that CDs with the case cut into or drilled into aren't paying the royalties.

Im presumming it's because the copyright for that one cd/dvd has already been paid for. The previous owner would no longer be listening to it, if they ripped it to thier computer it would be illegal for that cd to be resold whilst the previous still has those copies of the cd. I don't know if that is correct, but that is what i reckon.

the same reason why its legal to by a used car

agreed, its only illegal if you get cought. =)

first of all if you think its illegal to download music then you are dead wrong ....this is not a crime for something to be a crime you need to have an * inuired party* so tell me who was injured when i donloaded some music... you will say the band or the record label right ?? incorrect again the record label already got paid for it before it hit the internet ... someone actually went out and bought the CD at one point so your record label already got paid so they cannot scream they are ripped off ... remember the 80's ?? if u dont ask someone who does ... someone would get a tape ...a friend would hear it and say make me a copy .. this is called sharing this is all this is so only the uninformed people know or think its illegal to download music thats already been paid for dont let the powers that be put a spin on simple sharing there is not crime here... HAPPY SHARING !!!!! to answer your question its not illegal because the CD wasd already paid for by the original owner .. this music sharing piracy thing is just the givernments attempt to get a stranglehold on the internet like president bush already said he wanted to do in public on TV so dont let your self be fooled by government wordplay you are not commiting a crime ....
