The most important thing you can do is increase your exposure. But before you can do that, make sure that you are familiar with enough songs, or have enough songs written that you can give a show. Start with the area you are most familiar with when you perform concerts, because it is the easiest to gain popularity in. If your local shows get a good following, start making things like bumper stickers, t-shirts, etc to increase your exposure. Myspace does wonders for increasing the exposure to your music, and when you have refined what songs work and do not work well live, you can sit down and hammer out a demo album. If it is good enough, who knows, perhaps you'll get a chance to record it in a real studio.

Good luck.

And remember, INCREASE YOUR EXPOSURE AT ALL COSTS.

Well firstly. You guys need to work on some covers of other band. Cover songs you all like.. Then take influence from those songs to write your own ones.

When youve got few songs in your hand (be covers or your own) start up a MySpace, and tell all your friends about it. You could either record on your phone.. Or you can download softwares onto your laptop so you can record.. Recording equipment could be too expensive for starter bands. If you have any contacts with recording equipment, definitely ask em.. Ask your school music teachers, they can help you out..

Then you need to move on to palying live.. If youre a teen band, you should try out playing at your school. Like it or not, im sure kids will boo you, but if youre good you will definitely know you are worthy..
To play live, you need to have your timing and communication almost perfect. Keep constant eye contact with your band members, and give signals regularly.. Know when to start and end a song.. Practice makes perfect.

If you ARE SERRIOUS ABOUT YOUR band practise AT LEAST 3 times a week.( minimum for 1 hour)

When youve got your timing good, look for local open Mic nights.. Look on the internet, libraries. You will need to record a demo cd to give to hosts so they let you play. So record a cd and always keep one in hand so you can give it out to people..

As for songwriting. Theres millions of ways to write songs.
You could either start with an instrument- for eg, create a guitar riff then drums and others join in. Or the drum creates a beat and guitar joins in..

Or you could start with writing vocals first (probably the best way) Take influence from your everyday life.. If you come across interesting words on the internet or books try writing a song on it. I came across Infatuation and wrote a good song about stupid love.. Try and write lyrics everyday. It doesnt always have to be good. You will write 100 and out of those will come out 2 or 3 which are brilliant..

After writing the song, put in chords.. Then present it to your band. The band will then have a job to put in drums etc..

Hope that helped and Good Luck!!

Well, I'm not an artist but I can offer you some worthwhile advice. First of all, when it comes to songwriting make lyrics that a vast majority of people can relate to, and make the style that you present it in very entertaining. But hey, the lyrics and the music is all your own style, do what fits you. Carry a pen and pad with you EVERYWHERE... you never know when motivation may set in.

As far as recording goes, I'm sure you can find a studio somewhere near you, thats why there is Yahoo! Search and Google. You'll probably want to find somebody that knows what they are doing in the booth already so you aren't wasting any valuable studio time, it costs money. Thats why going to college for these types of things really can pay off, even if not for yourself, people will pay big money for somebody with experience.

After you've got your songs on tracks, you need to get word about yourself ALL OVER the streets if that means selling CDs, giving out CDs, performing live for free... Whatever makes people listen, whether they decide to like you is your choice but they'll never know if you don't ever reach their ears.

I'd continue this for a while until you've got a big enough fanbase to where people are recognizing you. Myspace is a great tool for pushing your band *hint hint*

This is when you need to get serious, compile your best songs on a demo and send it to as many record labels addresses you can find. If you catch somebodies eye.. Good Luck, you'd better KEEP writing!!

Learn to do it all yourselves. This includes promotion. Be an Indie band.
