Question: really about music, but i'd like to know why is it when something goes wrong in the world or a person's life, they always say..-"it has gone south"-? why south? i'm a southern boy and i think i'm offended!!!-just joking, but does anybody know why they use that term?

I always took it to mean that something (or someone's life etc)has been shot all to H*ell.... therefore South lol...
I believe the term is used because when things are falling apart, then the people are being brought 'down'. (He is really DOWN today...her life is on a DOWNward spiral, his life is really going DOWNhill, etc).
South is down.
take it as a compliment, coming from a northern girl, when the going gets tough, you go south, where it's warmer and easy living we think (i'm in snow and it's -20 celcius here) you go south, you just go away to get away from your problems.....it's not a bad thing...

South is considered down pardner, Heading South or Gone South just means Going down.
'South', in this instance, is synonymous with down, not necessarily south (in location)- just as 'north is up. It has nothing to do with geography. Try googling phrase origins...
Being from the south I have never really considered it being actually down south. I wouldn't take offense. Like the direction North is up and South is down. So it's going down. I think I just confused myself. He He!!!
maybe they say its gone south as in down hill or rock bottom i don't think there is any reference to the south which is the greatest place in the world
The way I have always thougt of it is that hell is thought of as being "south" of us. Instead of saying "everything has gone to hell" they'll say "everything has gone south". It has nothing to do with living in the southern part of the country.
zorlinda got it ..."gone south" means gone to hell....the ultimate "south"
