What are the benefits of learning how to read music if you're a bass guitari!
Question: it seems a lot of guys i know who play the bass only know tablature, but im not like them as in i don't play with a pick. im also into different styles of music than them (they're mostly into heavy metal and emo) i like zeppelin and the who and even some RHCP.

Well, tabliture it a wonderful thing, but It wont tell you tempo or how long to hold out a note, ect. If you learn to read sheet music you can just learn a song with that. You wont have to hear it first to get it correct. Aslo, Its easier if you ever plan to write music.
well say u are offered a gig and u dnt have the time to memorize the song completely..sheet music will help u along the way but if ur jus a recreational player then i dont think learning is that important
first off, tab doesn't give you any note values. (half note, eighth note, etc.) Second, once you learn to read actual music, you will open up yourself to so many more things...reading music is a skill that is not entirely rare, but if you know how to read music it helps a lot.

Anyway I used to play acoustic guitar, it wasn't much of a succes for me the only song I mastered was Hava Nagila (and I'm not just saying that). And reading music was crucial to the acoustic. But for extremely small amount of bass that I've played I'd have to say it isn't that important, with Bass it is more about the riff and the feel of what your playing.
