The very first Rap Artist that started the craze grabbed his crotch because he had jock itch. It caught on (not the jock itch) and the rest is history.
I asked a similar question over 20 years ago. I worked in an office with two black men (pardon my ignorance if that's not the proper term). I asked why they grabbed themselves when greeting each other. The answer I got was that white people have taken everything else from them so they were just checking to see if that was still there.......
