to answer both your questions- you are probably experiencing too much muscular tension in your throat when you sing. This not only causes a sore throat and a tired voice, but can irritate the tissues in the throat to the point where a cough becomes a warning sign of incipient damage.
You need to pay attention to using more and better breath support so that these delicate muscles in the throat don't have to compensate.
Those who advised singing lesons are right- under the guidance of a good teacher, one learns to avoid this sort of uninformed behavior. Singing is so much more than simply speaking to music.

its your brain telling you to stop cos you are so terrible and it does not want you to make a fool of yourself

You probably aren't doing anything "wrong". Singing dries out your throat. Bring a bottle of water with you when you sing. Take a sip before, during and after singing or as needed. This should help. It also helps if you don't smoke or drink alcohol before you sing.

Throat clearing and harsh coughing are traumatic to the vocal cords and should be reduced as much as possible. One of the most frequent causes for throat clearing and coughing is thick mucus (due to dry vocal folds) or too much mucus (as with a cold) on or below the vocal folds. The safest and most efficient way to clear mucus is by using a gentle, breathy productive cough where there is high airflow with little sound. This can be achieved by using the following strategy: take in as deep a breath as possible, momentarily hold your breath, and produce a sharp, silent “H” sound while you expel the air.

or

Ginger Root Tea:
Another remedy for coughing is ginger root tea. While coughing is a natural way you body expels mucous, it can be very rough on your vocal folds. Buy a piece of ginger root in your grocery store, slice it thinly and follow the same cooking directions as for licorice root tea. Sip the resulting ginger tea throughout the day and especially at night when coughing can tend to be more severe. This may be more effective for a cough than licorice.

and drink lots of water.
