How can I improve my piano sight reading technique?!

Question: I've been playing piano for two months now and I can't play anything from the page unless it's a single-note melody built on quarter and eighth notes. I know it takes time to build sight reading skills, but are there drills and practice exercises to build my ability?

You are being a little hard on yourself....music reading takes time and practice....just like reading you didn't learn to read in a couple of months....the best way to improve your technique is to get as much music as you can get your hands on and play often....it you do this for even an hour a day, everyday, I bet you'll improve your sight reading within a year.....the only drills that I know of are the scales....but some students know those well but still have trouble with sight reading.....so just do as much new reading as you can everyday, your bound to improve.....ask your teacher if you can borrow any books that she/he may have and study them on a daily bases, good luck to you.....bye !!!

I'm sure you can find a book of sight-reading drills to help you improve your sight reading. Other than that, practice practice practice! Everything takes time but if you regularly practice it will definitely help improve your skills. I'm a pretty good sight reader but that's cause I've been playing piano for 9 years, since I was 4 1/2. I'm sure you're going to become great!
Good luck!

Play lots of different pieces - vary the period, time signature, key signature etc. of the pieces.

Sight-reading gets much better with practice.

Of course, a book always comes in handy.

You won't be able to do it well with two hands until you've been playing for about a year. The "drill" is time and practice. There are no shortcuts. Keep learning and practicing all of your lessons and keep practicing site reading as well. It will come.

Been there! Get a metronome, start slowly and don't quicken it until you're perfect with each piece. Start with something basic. Use it with three different pieces, gradually accelerating your tempi. Work this way for a couple of weeks, then pick up something completely different and repeat the process.

You'll be amazed at how your sight-reading ability has improved.
