I would like to start electric guitar need a lil advice!?!

Question: hello all, i am thinking of starting the electric guitar. I have played piano for around 3 and a half years but stopped recently (just wanted to let you know i have slight musical experience and can read piano music - not sure if thats needed though). I dont have guitar YET (what type should i get?) and want to learn it. I wanted to teach myself the instrument but lessons are definatly not out of the question. i also have a few friends who have been playing guitar for a while who can get me started but i just wanted to know what equipment i need and if you know any really good dvd or books for teaching yourself guitar?

i have been researching the guitar recently and i have read that for rock/ punk/ metal music i should start on an electric. i always thought you had to start acoustic but i guess i am wrong (i have also heard that it is hard to switch from acoustic to electric in the future).

THANKS TO ALL ANSWERS!
*fingers crossed i get any*
:-)

Ideally it would be better for you to learn the principles of guitar playing on an acoustic guitar. Once you have grasped how to hold the guitar and how to strum, where to put your fingers ect.. then these skills can easily be transfered to the electric guitar, if anything it is easier to play the electric guitar because the neck is a lot thinner so it is easier to hold and pick out the chords. You could also possibly try a semi acoustic, this is an acoustic guitar with the capability of plugging it into an amplifier. When you are learning you will find that pressing down on the strings will hurt the tips of your fingers, this is normal. Over time with constant playing you will find that the skin will harden helping you to play for longer with comfort.

try that link for some tuition I couldn't tell you how good it is because I haven't tried it myself but I'm sure any lessons will be very helpful to you.

I learned and practised on acoustic. I used electric (Gibson Les Paul) when I needed it. I had a lot of success with only limited talent. Just stick with it and enjoy it (and don't give up on the piano).

Buy a cheap guitar and amp to start with. And buy some Tab books to get you started. My mates done that and are now in bands. You have a good musical back ground so should have no probs picking up the basics, and if you plan on playing an electric then start of that way.

In fact thats how Paul Thompson ( Drummer from Franz Ferdinand) started, he was at college with a mate and played Bass for a band called Gilded Lil, he got a cheap Bass and some some Tab books and now look at him

As with all instruments the better the instrument the better the quality/results.

A good source is free ads/ ebay, there are plenty of people who go out ,buy a Fender and give up after a few months.

For punk/ rock etc I would suggest the good old Stratocaster or one of the copies, obviously you need an amp.

Being able to read music is an advantage, a lot of gutiarists can only read Tab, I've had many a free pint converting the dots into tab for people.

Good luck.

You are making a good decision. The guitar is the best instrument in the world. I started by learning to tune the guitar, then I learn all the major guitar chords ( A,B,C,D,E,F,G), then I learnt some simple songs.

If you buy one of these 'teach yourself guitar' dvds you are wasting your money in my opinion because reading music and reading tablature, combined with learn a few tunes inthe
process, lets you carve your own path to learning.

Buy a chord book. Grab some simple songs (Bob Dylan, Oasis, Beatles) and it will blossom from there. Also if your rhythmn need fine tuning on certain songs you can geta Metronome (I just listen to the songs over and over again to get the rhythmn)

Good Luck!

Electric guitar starter kits (guitar, 10W practice amp, tutorial CD) are dirt cheap these days (<£100/$200). Depending on your budget you can probably get a cheap acoustic as well. There are a number of techniques on electric that are unsuitable/impossible on acoustic such as hammering (with the plectrum), sustain etc. and it's unlikely you'll come across an acoustic with a tremolo arm.

Hey.
My son is just starting out learning the drums. You could make a band...'The Novices'....
:-))

Good luck. Hope you do well.

buy a simple guitar that u can start w/ like stratocaster..then an amp..and print a guitar tabs that u ant to learn...
