For me, Social Distortion. No one wants to give them this kind of credit, but they literally gave birth to OC punk. That's pretty damn cool.
I also love the fact that like Zep and Pink Floyd they took forms of music that were already out and gave them their own flavor, creating an all-new sound.
I also love Skynyrd, but they're probly gonna get the popular vote anyway, so might as well mix it up a bit, right?
If you count the Jimi Hendrix Experience, I say them. Jimi was American while I think Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell are English. If you don't count the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the best of all time is Metallica. The were a modern day version of Led Zeppelin and still sell albums and sell out concert venues just because they are Metallica.

If the beatles were american i'd definately say them, but unfortunately they're not. Although they have become a HUGE part of american history and pop culture...
Personally my favorite american bands are probably jimi hendrix experience and nirvana.
The Eagles for greatest American Band. But if you include some of the British bands, then the Beatles are the best. They even have led to the fall of communism. No other band has done as much as the Beatles have done for the world. So I think The Beatles are the best band in the world.

The Sonics, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, or the Ramones. In my current mood I'd probably say the Ramones, one of America's greatest contributions to the world of music. You can hardly hear a band today that is even slightly "alternative" without hearing Ramones influence, and besides that they earn the spot on strength of material. Great great stuff.
