"Sellouts" - why do people get so upset with success?!

Question: *Reporter:
"Lars, what do you say when people accuse you of selling out?"
*Lars:
"Yeah we sold out.....we sold out every place we ever played!"

Why do some people get thier girlie knickers in a twist when bands become popular and accuse them of the dreaded "selling out". I am sure that 99.9% of bands on the planet would rather be a commercial success than playing in front of 20 drunk people in a bar on Bourbon Street every Friday and Sat night?
Perhaps you feel they have departed from thier roots? Everyone has to grow up you know. People change, times change it is inevitable, there's no getting past it and some bands become huge and others don't. Just because a band gets big doesn't meant they have "sold out".

Exactly. When a band plays the exact same thing for 8 years and never try anything different at all, they're apparently "staying true to themselves." But when a band or artist tries to change their music or evolve the way they sound or whatever, they're accused of "selling out."

There are many bands who won't play any old material anymore, not because they've "sold out" or whatever, but because they just can't related to their older stuff the same way they relate to their newer songs.

Also, it seems like a lot of people tend to stop listening to bands once they've become popular. I understand that some people stop listening to a band because they don't like new sound, but sometimes they stop just because of a band's popularity. Those people were never true fans in the first place.

I completely agree with you. I can't even explain how much.

Yes...I totally agree...do we sit at our job in the same position?
NO....maybe the true whinners are the dumbass who dont even have jobs...but Hey...these bands dream of making it big and yes times change...look at Kiss in the disco age..I dont care what people say I love I was made for loving u baby
I skated my *** off as a 2nd grader at the skating rink to that song and love it today:)

Helloooo I agreed with u and all...why the thumbs down?

I couldn't agree with you any less.
I don't know why people get so mad because their favorite band gets famous.
It's just dumb.

its not so much selling out that frustrates me, its the fact that they may have been an important band to you, and soon all you hear are little posers running around talking about them. i will use metallica as an example. they released some killer albums, up until the black album. when the black album was released, everybody that heard it loved it and acted like they worshiped Metallica, then when they followed that cd with their next one which was generally much heavier, all of the "fans" that loved the black album forget about the band again. its not bands selling out that makes me angry, its the fans of the band that becoming mainstream drags along. :)

this is what i think. people are so concerned with looking cool by knowing artists that others dont, that once they make it big, they call them wack. its the same in hip-hop. you have dudes talking bout good artists that went mainstream (but were still good) lame. i just view them as closed-minded and uptight, theyre too non-conformist.

its the same with my girlfriends friends. theyre always talking about taking back sunday, gym class heroes, and paramore being sellouts just because they are finally getting some recognition from the masses. they obviously arent big enough fans of them to feel good and proud that they are doing well, they want them all to themselves.

"Sellouts" are those that decide what to do BECAUSE it will bring commercial success. If a group/artist expresses themselves honestly, it is not selling out. TOOL is a great example.

Sorry bro but stupid question,if you have to ask then find new music, yeah we hate "success",no it's how they got it and Metallica are sell-outs their new stuff would'nt even be a pimple on the @ss of the old stuff, yeah they sold out so stop trying to fool yourself and when some other"fan" comes around to agree with you you can both switch to MTV and have a great time
Yeah I'm lame....get a tissue cuz I dont wanna hear your b*tching, pull the string lady, like I said truth hurts...and yeah maybe there's some lame @ss thing on MTV you can watch like A7X cuz they're like a totally awesome metal band too right!!Get over it--Slayer does the same thing and look how they did it,without radio and MTV,without ever diluting their sound or changing just to put a few extra butts in the seats,Slayer has just as many people packed in an arena,Slayer would destroy them now and anyone who knows metal knows that, yeah it's sad but true--ha get the irony there,if anything Slayer got faster and heavier and never comprimised their integrity, sorry BRO but you're done crying read this nice and slow 3-4 times to really take it in,Slayer is better and look how they got there
