When did rap/hiphop transfrom from something meaningful to its current form and !

Question: I completely agree with you. I loved Hip-hop in the 90's. But now it is garbage, right around 2000 it took a bad turn. Sorry. I think southern rappers destroyed hip-hop. They turned it into hip-Pop basically. But then again I cant even blame them, I have to blame all the dumb people who buy their CD's.

right around 1999/2000 probably..and..i blame the cash money millionaires...

i say in 2002-2003 about, thats when CDs stopped selling so rappers started changing up to keep the label happy.

I blame, Unk. He is wack. There is some good music out there still, just have to search. East Coast music is still pretty good. It's all the South and West that starting to suck.

It died along with Tupac & Biggie.

It then became more about rivalry than music.

music out of the south didnt kill it. what killed it was putting "rappers" in the club. now all these wussies want to make a "dance" song so that the ladies can shake their monkies and what not. you guys want to hear some rap from the south that will change your mind about them. look up mr.pookie, and lil keke's "crook for life."

Well I think it is quite simple,EAZY E AND N.W.A. DESTROYED HIP HOP PERIOD they glorify gang violence and degrade women and thats when hip hop transformed into its current form.

Good question; I don't know either. I love rap and hip-hop but I see your point on where it's headed. What happened to stuff like TuPac's "dear mama" and "keep your head up" where he's praising women and single moms...I love the beats but sometimes the words can really degrade females. Why?

It all really started around 96-97 ish, post big and pacs deaths. Things went downhill from there. Just look at what started coming out then........a lot of artists were turning commercial as well........a lot really got kicked off at that time.

*Edit*
Eazy was not the first rapper to speak on violence or degrading women. If you know your rap history, you would also know that nwa, not eazy (as an individual) were the first rap group to reach double platinum status ( was released on eazy's record label I might add, ruthless) and they had no air play becuase of their lyrics.

So if you think about it, eazy along with the rest of NWA, paved the way for a lot of past and present rappers and put them on the map. If you think about it, geto boys were out too, so why not say them as well and the other groups who came out wit it.

Hip-hop has been destroyed by the people that have converted positive lyrics to negative ones. Referring to women as Hoes, B*tiches etc...and rapping about dumb things like grills, 24'' Rims, bling bling, promoting guns/violence and using the N word every 2 seconds.

I've never been a big fan of hip-hop but i did find it more enjoyable in the 90's. Give me some ''uplifting'' caribbean music anyday...btw this is coming from a BLACK person!

and people give me a thumbs down for speaking the truth....blahh...like i care....

I'm sorry to say but the younger generation destroyed hip hop. They bought into all this "club" hip hop with no depth and the music executives ran with it. They stopped signing artists with real talent and accquired the Lil Jon's and the Ying Yang Twins (those type of rappers) because that's what was and still is selling.

The shift away from new york rappers around '92 any true hip hop fan will tell u most of the best MC's came from there
