For $500 you will easily be able to find a guitar. I play one brand, but will not mention them, because it is important that when you purchase an instrument that you feel completely comfortable with it. Just because I love my guitar does not mean that you will. The important thing when buying a guitar is to try as many as you can, even if you do not know how to play. Sit down with the instrument wrap your fingers around the neck strum it, press the strings down to the fretboard (it is important that the strings do not sit too high off of the fretboard), make sure that the weight is comfortable both sitting and standing. I recommend that you purchase a used instrument if you can, for $500, you would get an instrument that would cost you about $700 - 800 if it was new. If you are just starting out, find a good on-line community with a lot of players of all experiences so that you can ask questions, my favorite is:

Good Luck and happy shopping.

guitars are really just about the look. you might try a flying v, sg or superstrat. the les paul is also popular.

get a fender =D

Well from the bands you listed it sounds like you like the sound of the double humbucker setup. Maybe an SG, Les Paul, PRS, or Flying V type of guitar. If you really prefer the strat body you can get a double fat strat.

I would suggest going to the music store if you can and picking up as many guitars as you can that are in and around your price range. That really is the best way to get a guitar that you will like.
